Title: Plum Pudding Set
Project / Design: The client’s request for this project
was to design furniture for their dining room that would elevate the space
to a higher level.
They wanted a stunning environment for entertaining, a place to display objects
d’art and a buffet that would realize practical use for serving food.
We
combined some Retro elements with High Tec in designing these unique pieces.
Subtle angles were used to create movement and shadows. The
Display cabinet
features a wedge of illuminated glass that appears to balance in the base cabinet.
Topping the buffet with a piece of glass elevated on standoffs is practical
as well as visually pleasing. An optical illusion is created by the intersecting
pyramid shapes in the base of the table. Although centered one atop the other,
from certain viewing angles the top veneered pyramid seems to be launching
away from the bottom Black Granite pyramid! It is slightly mind boggling.
In
consultation with the clients we choose an unusual veneer in the Mahogany family
called “Plum Pudding”. The depth
of the distinctive grain pattern is quite eye-popping! Wenge, selected for
its contrasting color and
grain pattern, was inlaid in the tops, used as a backdrop for the glass Display
cabinet and fabricated into feet and pulls. Ebony was used for accent elements
and in the hand carved pulls. It has a marvelous feel.
