Flamboyant Dining Set

Title: Flamboyant Dining Set

As featured on HGTV's Modern Masters Series.

Dimensions: chairs - 54” x 20” x 18’

Project / Design: From a rough sketch on a napkin this design evolved to become a truly stunning dining room set for very discriminating repeat clients. When this set was delivered the response by the client was actually, “ It’s 300 times better than I expected!!”

Bold design with clean lines required innovative construction techniques. Countless steps were involved in the construction.

English Sycamore veneer was chosen for the chairs - utilizing every leaf of a flitch of beautiful veneer the veneer of the front and back of each chair is book-matched and each chair is identical to the next. There was no margin for error! Gorgeous Fiddleback English Sycamore was laid in a fan pattern for the design element on the back and is bordered by elegant Solid Ebony molding which also tops the crests and trims the bottom edge of the seats. Butter-soft Black Italian leather adds to the opulent look and feel of these special chairs.

The Table appears to be simplicity itself but is actually a work of art itself. Four independent “pods” of solid Ebony were constructed of twin units of solid Ebony glued up in barrel stave form and turned with a custom-made lathe. A sunburst pattern of English Sycamore was laid flush into the tops and a huge 6’ x 10’ piece of ¾ “ thick glass rests on top. Structural steel stands actually support the weight of glass and the Ebony “pods” are a shell concealing them. While in the design phase it was suggested to the client that a faux Ebony finish could be applied to a less expensive wood for the table bases. The response was, “If you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly. Use the real thing.”
